Governor Chris Sununu Signs Bill Protecting Consumer Data

Concord, NH – This week, Governor Chris Sununu signed SB 255, relative to the expectation of privacy, into law.

Under the new law, New Hampshire becomes the 14th state to enact comprehensive consumer privacy protections ensuring that Granite State consumers can view what personal data is collected by companies, how it is held, and to have that information deleted upon request.

“New Hampshire is living up to our motto as the Live Free or Die State by ensuring that Granite Staters have control over their personal information,” said Governor Chris Sununu. “This law provides transparency about what information is collected, why, and confidence that in the age of AI, steps are taken to protect that data.”

Previously, in the wake of congressional inaction to establish national consumer protections, New Hampshire citizens did not have a right to control personal data held by private entities. Not only does this legislation provide that, but it also assigns a responsibility and framework to businesses in handling, controlling, and protecting personal data.

NOTE: This week, Governor Chris Sununu also signed HB 154, relative to electronic ballot counting devices, into law.
