Governor Chris Sununu To Honor Milford Native Harriet E. Wilson

Concord, NH – On Wednesday, March 15, Governor Chris Sununu will present the "Harriet E. Wilson Memorial Chair" to the Wadleigh Memorial Library in Milford, NH. Known for her literary and cultural contributions, Harriet Wilson, who was born on March 15, 1825, in Milford, NH, became the first African American to publish a novel in the United States.

"New Hampshire is proud to celebrate Hattie Wilson’s trailblazing accomplishments and inspirational life story by honoring her legacy with this memorial chair," said Governor Chris Sununu. "This month"s celebration presents a unique opportunity for all Granite Stater’s to recognize and reflect on the many ways in which Hattie Wilson contributed to our state"s rich history."

Wadleigh Memorial Library Director Betsy Solon said of the announcement, "We appreciate this opportunity to honor Milford’s Harriet E. Wilson, the first published African American female author. We hope this event will bring attention to her accomplishments and support our library"s mission to promote inclusion and diversity to all of our citizens."

Dan and Renee Plummer of Portsmouth, NH, sponsored the commission of the chair, which was handcrafted by Doug Dimes of D.R. Dimes American Furniture in Northwood, NH.

“As soon as I learned of Hattie Wilson I knew we should honor her life in a way that connected people and educated future generations of her remarkable story,” said Renee Plummer. "Libraries are a wonderful centerpiece for New Hampshire communities and the perfect place to preserve this author's legacy. I hope other libraries around the state replicate this memorial."

The public and press are invited to join Governor Chris Sununu at the Wadleigh Memorial Library on Wednesday, March 15, at 10:00 AM as he presents the Harriet E. Wilson memorial chair.
